HOMEOWNER SAVES THOUSANDS AFTER INSTALLING WOOD BURNER

September 02, 2011 - A homeowner has slashed her utility bills by around two-thirds after installing a new wood burning heating system supplied by Shropshire-based Broseley Fires.

Before installing one of the firm’s acclaimed eVolution8 boiler stoves, Joanne Shipp was spending £3,000 a year on heating and providing hot water for her home near Bristol.

The lovingly restored, 17th-century stone farmhouse is outside a mains gas area and the rocketing price of oil forced her to look at more cost effective ways of keeping cosy in the six bedroom, three-story property.

With no end in sight to rising fuel prices Joanne sought advice from Responsible Energy Management (REM) Limited, a company specialises in helping homeowners to reduce their carbon footprint whilst cutting their energy costs.

The company then developed a complete system for Joanne, incorporating solar panels and a thermal store alongside the eVolution 8.

“The results have been really dramatic,” said Joanne. “Although we still use oil as a back-up we expect to save around £2,000 a year.

“We are particularly pleased with the new wood-burning boiler stove. It generates just enough heat to keep the downstairs comfortable and the stone walls act as radiators, giving off heat long after the wood burner has gone out.

“The thermal store also ensures we always have plenty of hot water. In winter this is predominately heated by the boiler stove whilst in summer the solar panels do an excellent job.”

Joanne is not alone in discovering the benefits of wood burners. Since new regulations were introduced allowing approved stoves and boilers to be used in smoke control areas, Broseley has seen a massive increase in demand for its innovative range of products.

Tristan Johnston, Product Development Engineer at Broseley, explained: “The DEFRA have proved a real boost to us, with sales of approved products up by 65 per cent. To meet this demand we have launched a series of products meeting these strict regulations whilst satisfying different tastes.

“The eVolution range offers contemporary designs that would not look out of place in the most modern home and we have also developed state-of-the-art stoves that have a more traditional look,” he added.

As well as savings on fuel bills an added bonus for homeowners is the fact that all Broseley’s DEFRA approved stoves are subject to reduced VAT of just five per cent thanks to a government incentive scheme.
