Wilmat connects with BT for safe and efficient system support

August 23, 2011 - A Birmingham-based manufacturer of materials handling equipment is helping telecommunications giant BT to fulfil a commitment to ongoing investment in the latest computer technology.

The BT group needed specialist equipment to install new servers and turned to Wilmat for help with developing a bespoke solution.

To utilise space, the servers are housed together in a blade chassis which then slides into a cabinet. The combined weight of a blade chassis is upwards of 100kg and having the right handling equipment is necessary to install and remove the servers as and when required.

Wilmat supplied three platform plate lifting trucks that will help BT stay at the forefront of technological advances by making the transportation and installation of the new generation servers an everyday task that can be completed safely and swiftly.

Steve Gauge, Technical Specialist at BT’s Oswestry Data Centre, explained: “We needed a manual handling truck which would enable the operator to lift and manoeuvre the equipment in a safe and responsible way. The truck is also required to provide a solid foundation for the precise installation of the blade chassis."

A major reason that Wilmat won the contract was its ability to provide a reliable solution that keeps downtime and maintenance to an absolute minimum.

“Being able to do a job first time and as efficiently as possible is very important to us, so we need the tools to help us achieve this," said Steve Gauge. "The equipment we use has to be solid, robust and reliable to enable us to reach our stringent installation and maintenance targets, both quickly and safely.”

Andrew Capella, Technical Director at Wilmat, said: “We are pleased to have secured this contract with a market leader as well known as BT. The contract is testament to the high standard of the platform truck and bespoke service that Wilmat offers its customers.”
