June 14, 2011 - With young people facing the toughest jobs market for a generation, a local company has stepped in to give youngsters an insight into how a large company works and the range of careers available.
Cannock-based forklift specialist, Briggs Equipment, recently held a visit from around 30 pupils from Jerome Primary School and was led by the company’s Chief Operating Officer, Chris Meinecke. The half day visit enabled the children to learn about the world of work and the skills they need to find jobs in the future.
Chris Meinecke said: “It has been very difficult for school leavers to find work since the recession and it is important to us that we teach young people about all the different careers available. This is the third year that we have held the Jerome Primary visit and each year the pupils enjoy interacting with our staff and learning about their different roles.”
The 10-11 year olds spent time on a site tour as well as participating in special talks from key departments including human resources, customer services, marketing, telesales and engineering. A Q&A session with Chris, complete with afternoon tea, also enabled them to understand how the working world relies on what they learn in school.
The children saw how businesses specialise into smaller departments, and how these smaller teams contribute to the success of the company. A forklift demonstration and talk tied in practical application to subjects such as science and maths.
Jerome Primary’s head teacher, Rachel Hawkins, said: “Every year the pupils really enjoy their visit to Briggs. We like to introduce them to working life at an early age to show them that the skills they learn in school are important in the world of work and will support future progress. Our thanks go out to Briggs’ people for giving up their valuable time to help our children.”
