Cooper SH Wins Major Contract for UK’s Largest Mobile Container Handling Fleet

April 20, 2011 - Cooper SH has won a major contract to supply 15 reach stackers and container handlers to one of the UK’s largest users of container handling equipment.

Pentalver Transport Ltd is one of the UK’s leading container logistics companies operating across three of the UK’s major ports and an inland port facility in Cannock, Staffordshire with a road fleet of almost 250 tractor units and 400 trailers. The contract with Cooper SH will help the firm save over £20,000 per year in fuel costs.

The fleet which consists of 10 Konecranes SMV ECB 100 double stacking empty container handlers and five Konecranes 4531 TB reach stackers will be delivered into Pentalver’s Felixstowe, Southampton and Tilbury operations. The specification of each truck has been carefully selected utilising Cooper SH’s extensive experience in consultation with Pentalver’s own engineers.

Chris Lawrenson, Managing Director of Pentalver Transport, explains: “We operate a total of 46 machines across our container operations which, we understand, is the largest fleet of mobile front loading container handlers in the UK. Our trucks work up to 3,000 hours per year and with fuel prices continuing to increase, we needed to ensure that our running costs and our total cost of ownership were kept to an absolute minimum.

“Container logistics is an arduous environment and we are impressed with the high specification and engineering content of the machines. The ECO Drive is of particular interest to us as it means we can reward and promote best practice to save fuel costs.”

It is estimated that the application of ECO Drive – an award-winning fuel measurement tool - alone will save over £20, 000 per year in fuel costs across the new fleet.

In addition, the empty container handlers have been specified with a ‘high-rear’ cab position which will place the driver’s seat 1200mm higher over the rear ballast than the standard ‘low-rear’ position.

Chris Barnes, Sales Manager for Cooper SH, said: “These are the first empty container handling machines we have supplied in the UK built to this specification. They allow optimum all-round visibility, which is very important in a busy container operation, and enables operators to work safely and productively.”

The 15 machines will be maintained through a combination of Pentalver’s own engineering resources at Felixstowe and Southampton with Cooper SH offering technical support to these sites as well as full maintenance at sites where Pentalver does not have an engineering presence.
