January 10, 2011 - Livingston-based materials handling supplier, Briggs Equipment has helped up to 2,000 volunteers give blood by donating 200 stress cubes to the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service.
With only six percent of the British population volunteering to give blood, the Blood Transfusion Service needs regular donations to help save lives of local patients. The stress cubes help volunteers to circulate blood flow before the procedure making it easier to donate blood.
Briggs Equipment had originally sent some stress cubes as a gift to regular blood donor and customer, Gordon McLeod of Scotland Gas Networks (SGN). When Gordon wanted an additional 200 cubes to donate to the Blood Transfusion Service, Briggs were happy to help.
“It seems that the stress cubes have a more valuable role than just being a corporate gimmick,” commented Billy Allison, Scotland General Manager of Briggs Equipment. “We were very happy to send Gordon a load more.”
The cubes were delivered the following week and passed on to Gordon’s local donor centre. Gordon who is the Plant Protection Officer for SGN explained: “The Edinburgh Blood Donor Centre was delighted with the stress cubes. They get through a lot of them each week so they were put to use straight away.”
Gordon has been donating blood for 13 years and recently won an award at the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Services’ ‘Donor Award Ceremony’ in October 2010. Held at the City Chambers in Edinburgh, Gordon was recognised for reaching 100 blood donations.
