June 20, 2007 - Briggs Equipment, the Cannock-based UK distributor of Caterpillar lift trucks, has given Redhill Community School a facelift to make the school and its grounds more welcoming.
A team of employees from Briggs, lead by administration team leader, Kate Hill, spent a day at the school in Chadsmoor, Cannock, digging out the overgrown flower beds and planting new trees and shrubs. The project is part of Redhill School’s programme to improve the school and its grounds and came about as a result of pupils in Year 4 identifying that the front of the school needed to be more welcoming. Briggs Equipment, which has a strong philosophy of community involvement, was introduced to the school by Cares, a local business in the community initiative. The company quickly assembled a team of employees to get involved in producing a welcoming front reception area and grounds for the school.
Head Teacher Libby Banks, said, “This project is part of creating our new identity and leaving behind what has sometimes been a difficult past. Getting pupils involved in improving their school and introducing them to the wider community, through Briggs’ involvement, develops their self-esteem and life skills and contributes to making them the person they’re going to be in the future. Both the children and the staff really appreciate the time and effort that Briggs has put into our school, it has made a dramatic difference to the welcoming face of Redhill. ”
The thirteen-strong Briggs team overhauled the entire area in front of reception as well as the path leading up to the school’s entrance, digging out the old flower beds, covering the ground with membrane and bark and planting flower tubs, bedding plants and small conifers. Briggs invested over £400 in the materials to complete the work, and Richard Close, CEO of Briggs Equipment, who was one of the volunteers, said, “Everyone worked really hard to make this happen today, and it has been a great experience for us to work together as a team. It was fantastic to see how delighted the children were with our work, which was all the reward we needed. At Briggs Equipment, we have a strong belief in getting involved in the local community, and we are planning to do more of these projects on an ongoing basis.”
