A SITE TO BEHOLD

- The Benefits of Getting Site Surveys Right -

August 24, 2007 - When purchasing materials handling equipment, it is vital to ensure you receive the right truck for your application. There are a host of factors which dictate truck type, specification, attachment and the number of machines needed to handle a specific application.

An equipment provider should visit the site and compile a site survey as part of any machine order. Briggs’ site survey is a thorough, written document which looks at applications and specifications across a site and assesses in detail the load and lifting characteristics of the equipment, the racking and palletisation requirements, layout and condition of the site.

The site survey is an integral part of Briggs’ whole life cost approach to fleet management and is often the starting point for a long-term customer relationship. If the site survey is carried out thoroughly, it enables accurate safety recommendations for the type and number of trucks, tyres, and attachments required, as well as custom fittings such as speed limiters. As part of its wider scope it takes into account battery charging facilities, safe operator practice and operator training, and also considers the safe working conditions of the engineer working on site.

Briggs take a comprehensive, 'back to basics' approach to fully understand the site layout and the unique demands of the customer’s business, taking into full account the Health and Safety and regulatory framework.

All too often, customers operate too many trucks and pay rental fees for more trucks than they actually need. Similarly, customers can pay out significant sums for over-specified trucks which offer superior lift and loading capabilities that are not needed for the task. The site survey and ongoing consultative support goes a long way to safeguard against these site problems. Importantly, customers should always assess how well their equipment partner approaches this task, as this is marker of how they will undertake fleet management.

Without a thorough site survey being completed initially, it is impossible for any equipment provider to make any meaningful fleet management changes in the future, as these recommendations will be based on inaccurate data. The message to the customer is clear – get it surveyed!
