July 15, 2008 - Beardow Adams manufactures high quality adhesives handling up to 600 tonnes of hot melt material each week at its busy Bradville site in Milton Keynes. To cope with increased capacity the company recently took delivery of seven new Caterpillar fork lift trucks fitted with intelligent technology to help reduce damage and increase the safety of its people on site.
Following its acquisition of Fentac adhesives last year, privately owned Beardow Adams has steadily increased its production capacity and today around 60% of its products are exported all over the world. It worked closely with its materials handling supplier, Briggs Equipment, to make sure that the trucks, each of 2.5 tonne capacity, had the highest possible safety ratings and could help to reduce damage and prevent accidents on site.
Stan Wilson, purchasing facilities manager, explains, “This site is busy 24 hours a day. We are often under pressure to get product out the door quickly and we wanted to make sure that our drivers are working as safely and efficiently as possible.”
Briggs Equipment fitted each of the Cat trucks, which include a mixture of gas and electric machines, with an intelligent truck management system. The system includes a speed limiting device and a driver login procedure. Data on impacts and damage is transmitted via a wireless network from the trucks as the incidents happen, updating the main system in real-time.
“As well as providing thorough reports, the system also alerts them when impacts occur, so that the manager is made immediately aware and can deal with the problem there and then, “ comments Jason Rudkin, senior sales executive at Briggs Equipment. “The drivers are more careful with the trucks now, this has helped to reduce accidents and damage around the site has decreased significantly.”
Jason, a local man himself, is responsible for the Beardow Adams account and is regularly on site to ensure that Stan and his team have all the information, support and service that they need to keep the plant running 24 hours a day.
