June 23, 2008 - Employees at Briggs Equipment are taking themselves off site for personal development and making a difference in the local community.
The Cannock based company takes an innovative approach to the learning and development of its staff. In the last year, nearly 50 employees have already given their time to a programme of community-based projects and put their hearts into helping others.
In May a team from the service centre in Cannock spent two days at the Haven refuge in Wolverhampton, stripping, plastering and decorating the main lounge and utility room. The Briggs’ makeover gave a much needed refurbishment to improve the living area for women and their families who are victims of domestic abuse.
The team of eight employees, led by credit control clerk, Dawn Watton, organised the work schedule and risk assessment, as well as arranging all the materials. In a challenge reminiscent of The Apprentice, the team not only secured carpets, flooring, curtains and paint but they completed the task in less than two days.
Amanda Wooldridge, volunteer coordinator at the refuge, said: “The makeover is amazing. They worked really hard to get all this done in two days. The families that stay here have been through tremendous strife and hardship and by making this place look so homely will go a long way to improving their lives.”
Briggs Equipment sees its people as its best asset and invests heavily in their development. The projects give all employees a chance to take on a new challenge. Dawn Watton explains; “It seemed like an enormous undertaking at first. We were up against time and with limited budgets. Local suppliers, such as Castle Flooring and Ben Tapsell Carpets, were very generous and gave us materials free of charge. The transformation is remarkable; it is truly rewarding to give something back to others who need it. It was great fun working with other people in the business that you don’t normally get to work with.”
As well as giving staff a chance to develop and hone their interpersonal, leadership and communication skills, the camaraderie serves to build strong team spirit back at the office.
Another group from Briggs recently helped to build 30 metres of paths and steps and cut back undergrowth in an overgrown woodland area in Bloxwich. The area is used by local children and residents. The team from Briggs have helped make the area safe and more welcoming for them, and their work will also encourage the growth of natural species of trees and other vegetation.
