March 26, 2008 - Cannock based Briggs Equipment, the UK’s sole national Cat® Lift Truck distributor, is living up to its reputation for being the industry’s first choice service provider after being awarded recognition for its approach to lifelong learning.
The 10th Walsall Lifelong Learning awards recognise and promote the benefits of high quality organisational learning, such as that which has been achieved with Briggs’ four-year Modern apprentice scheme and its specialist parts apprentice scheme.
Clive Green, parts business development manager at Briggs Equipment says: “This has been an excellent programme incorporating on the job learning, with week long intensives at manufacturing sites such as Jaguar, as well as classroom based provision through local colleges.
“As well as equipping our people with the technical skills to do their jobs, it provides them with a rounded understanding of what the customer wants. We are delighted to be recognised for our efforts and investment in training. It has helped to raise the profile of parts logistics as a skill in its own right, it will help other businesses to realise what an important contribution parts logistics makes to success of the supply chain.”
Briggs Equipment thinks outside of the box when it comes to learning. It encourages employees to get involved in local community projects, giving many non-supervisory employees a chance to develop leadership, interpersonal skills and work cross functionally with other colleagues. It is also piloting e-Learning schemes, looking at how e-Learning can help deliver new skills to 900 employees faster and easier.
Peter Fanning, director of HR at Briggs Equipment, comments, “Culture is crucial to us as a learning organisation. Briggs has a very open culture, which encourages strong employee engagement; making the organisation open to learning. The culture makes it easier for them to learn, because learning involves an element of risk and change. The company is also willing to think broadly about skills development, which encourages creativity.”
Briggs’ sales training programme, designed to meet the business’ needs for high quality sales executives, along with its leadership programme, aims to develop a broad base of leaders in the business and aims to create a culture in the business inline with a powerful set of core values. Its award winning Advanced Modern Apprentice Scheme for engineers had an intake of 12 people for 2007 and now has 23 apprentices in total. The scheme includes both Level 2 and Level 3 NVQs and over the four years’ the apprenticeship delivers a programme that is highly relevant to Briggs’ business and produces a highly skilled, rounded engineer with a clear pathway for progression.
